Lecture “From Roman Civitas to Anglo-Saxon Shire” by Bruce Eagles, Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University

With an emphasis upon Wiltshire, Bruce will draw attention to three themes in his recently published book, From Roman Civitas to Anglo-Saxon Shire. Topographical Studies on the Formation of Wessex.

  • Who was a Briton and who was a Saxon in the turbulent world that followed the collapse of Roman government at the beginning of the 5th century?
  • The marked contrast between eastern (Berkshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight) and western (Somerset and Dorset) Wessex in the 5th and 6th centuries.
  • The boundaries of the Roman civitates and the formation of the county of Wiltshire.

There will be an opportunity to buy the book and have it signed by the author.

Lecture 7pm (Doors open 6pm – come and have a look at our Roman and Saxon galleries before the lecture)
