The San Antonio Public Library and San Antonio Public Library Foundation own a collection of WW1 propaganda prints and posters, which are on a two-year tour of Europe. Wiltshire Museum is the only UK exhibition venue for this collection, which will be on display in Devizes from 18th November 2017 until the following April. Allison Hays Lane, guest Curator of The Winds and Words of War, opened the exhibition on Saturday 18 November.
The United States entered the First World War on 6 April 1917 and San Antonio and Bexar County were extremely important to the war effort. Over one-tenth of the soldiers deployed to the Western Front were trained through San Antonio’s military bases. In 2006, the San Antonio Public Library Foundation undertook the task of looking through the archives and collection of Harry Hertzberg, to discover hundreds of vintage Propaganda prints and posters from the War. The following year, the Foundation began a project to tour and promote the fabulous collection of vintage lithographs in the USA and later on tour in Europe; generously supported by the Bexar County Commissioners.
