LECTURE: Wor Barrow - Dr Mike Allen
2:30 pm, Saturday, 07 October, 2017
Wor Barrow is an iconic Neolithic barrow excavated by General Pitt Rivers (the father of modern archaeology) in 1893-4. 100 years later, recent research led by Mike Allen on the archive, the human bones, and radiocarbon dating provide some fascinating insights and new insights of the barrow, and of Neolithic life, Neolithic communities, and the selection and treatment of the dead. New information about the date, the bodies, and the burial of people in barrow was surprising, unexpected and confounded general wisdom - making us rethink this monument and Neolithic Society
Mike Allen, is an environmental archeologists and geoarchaeologist having worked in southern English providing interpretations and reconstructions of land-use for Stonehenge, Avebury, Dorchester and Cranborne Chase landscapes, and has also worked on the publication as diverse at Potterne, Market Lavington and the Mary Rose. He is the author of numerous monographs and the textbook Molluscs in Archaeology.
