Society MembershipThe Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society was founded in 1853, and celebrated its 150th birthday on 12 October 2003. WANHS members are interested in the unique heritage of Wiltshire, some are archaeologists, others are naturalists or historians whilst many just love our county and care about its preservation and conservation. All members receive, each year, a copy of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine (WANHM), one of the country's most respected academic county journals. Members also receive a copy of Trilithon, the Society's newsletter, every six months and enjoy priority booking for the varied programme of lectures, outings and events held throughout the year. Free entry to the Museum, Library and Gallery are a further benefit of membership of WANHS (plus free entry to the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum).
Some of our members involve themselves more directly as volunteers in the running of the Society (as trustees or committee members for example), Museum (in cataloguing, reception duties or administrative assistance) and Library (research, cataloguing and librarian duties) and in attending and organising events and outings.
WANHS has been closely involved in the development of several bodies, such as the Wiltshire Record Society, the Wiltshire Buildings Record and the Wiltshire and Swindon Biological Records Centre. Always closely interested in the protection of Avebury and Stonehenge, the Society has sponsored several preservation projects and opposed developments impinging on these World Heritage Sites. Set up as the guardian of antiquarian records, the prehistoric landscape and the natural history of the county, the Society remains the focus for those interested in the archaeological, historical and architectural heritage of Wiltshire.
