OUTING: Bowood – Capability Brown’s landscape and lakeland walk

This walk will take us from Sandy Lane down into the Bowood landscape. This was one of ‘Capability’ Brown’s most successful commissions, and many of the elements he designed can be still seen today, notably the lake. The walk takes us around his lake, to look at the cascade, returning by the same route. Be prepared for a climb back towards Sandy Lane, with a discussion of the fortunes of the Whetham estate, which we will skirt around, before returning to the car park.

Led by Wendy Bishop, PhD – a specialist in garden history, whose book Ornamental Lakes: their Origins and Evolution in English Landscapes is published in June.

This is a 5.5 mile walk, mostly a fairly easy stroll along the lake, but with a climb back up to Sandy Lane at the end of the walk.

With special thanks to Lord Landsdowne who has given us special permission to visit the Cascade.
