The Mystery of Wansdyke is the title of a book by Albany and Major published in 1926. Until the summer of 2021, the title of the volume perfectly summed up our understanding of one of the largest field monuments in Britain. Academics have spilled ink by the bucket-load arguing for various dates ranging between the late Roman period and the 9th century AD. New fieldwork has revealed scientific dates for the East Wansdyke which place it in the 8th century AD. This talk considers the implications of these results.
Andrew is Professor of Medieval Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology in London.
