POSTPONED: EVENING WALK: Exploring the Upper By Brook Valley

POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19

Led by Isobel Geddes, Project Officer for the Wiltshire Geology Group and WANHS member.

Walk to Slaughterford on a riverside footpath and back, with an optional extension upstream to Long Dean (a total of 4 miles).

The By Brook valley cuts deeply down into the southern Cotswold Hills through limestones and clays, representing a variety of shallow marine sub-tropical sea floor environments sea which covered this part of Europe around 170 million years ago. The fast-flowing waters of the By Brook have been utilised over the centuries to power the water wheels of mills, originally grinding corn into flour, but later adapted for other purposes.
