FILMING HARDY: A tour of Devizes

SOLD OUT Various dates throughout the run of the exhibition.

Hardy’s Wessex: Filming ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’: a tour of the Devizes locations of the 1967 film.

Led by local historian John Girvan – who was there(!) – hear about the filming of the 1967 version of Far From the Madding Crowd.

Explore the locations captured in the 1967 film of Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd, directed by John Schlesinger and starring Alan Bates, Julie Christie, Peter Finch and Terence Stamp.

For two weeks in 1966, Devizes was turned back in time, becoming a Georgian market town, with horses and carts, farm labourers dressed in smocks and ladies in crinolines. The walk will visit the locations where Gabriel Oak was hired by William Boldwood as a shepherd, Sergeant Troy was jilted at the altar by Fanny Robins and Bathsheba showed how good a farmer she became.

The walk will visit the Market Place, Corn Exchange, Shambles and St John’s Church. John captured the filming on his home movie camera and will share some behind-the-scenes stories of the stars.
