GEOLOGY THEMED OUTING: Bradford on Avon

*NEW DATE – SATURDAY 19 SEPTEMBER* *SOLD OUT*

Led by Isobel Geddes, Project Officer for the Wiltshire Geology Group and a WANHS member.

This is a 4.5 mile walk to Avoncliff (note – footpath through Becky Addy Wood is sometimes muddy and rough) and around Bradford town (rather steep back streets).

This walk will relate local Cotswold geology of the Avon valley to human activities over the centuries. People made use of the abundant stone, probably the town’s oldest industrial activity, and also the river: the water-bearing Jurassic limestones are the source of the Avon. The river powered water wheels in a number of mills that drove the machinery used in the woollen industry. Fossils of the Jurassic sea-floor (geology site) will demonstrate events in the sub-tropical environment here 180 million years ago.

Date: Saturday 19 SEPTEMBER 2020 2-5 pm
Cost: £10 – £8 WANHS members. Booking essential – maximum 6.
Meet: Meet 2pm by picnic tables above the towpath, next to the British Waterways car park at the end of Baileys Barn (off Moulton Drive) – Grid Ref. ST826602.

Stout footwear, protective clothing to suit the prevailing weather conditions and reasonable mobility will be required. Please ensure that you bring water and snacks; this is particularly important in hot weather.
