With an emphasis upon Wiltshire, Bruce will draw attention to three themes in his recently published book, From Roman Civitas to Anglo-Saxon Shire. Topographical Studies on the Formation of Wessex.
- Who was a Briton and who was a Saxon in the turbulent world that followed the collapse of Roman government at the beginning of the 5th century?
- The marked contrast between eastern (Berkshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight) and western (Somerset and Dorset) Wessex in the 5th and 6th centuries.
- The boundaries of the Roman civitates and the formation of the county of Wiltshire.
There will be an opportunity to buy the book and have it signed by the author.
