This is the intriguing story of the helmet worn by Sir Thomas Long of Draycot Cerne, who fought beside King Henry VII in the turmoil at the end of the Wars of the Roses. It spans nearly 600 years of history: beginning in the heart of the European arms trade, it also involves the mystery of the Princes in the Tower, the pretender Perkin Warbeck, and even informs our modern study of the founding of the Royal Armouries by Henry VIII, England’s first truly Renaissance Prince.

Chris Dobson spent over 30 years working as a Master Armourer and expert restorer of armour and edged weapons. In 1995 he was appointed Master Armourer to the Royal Armouries. In time his work expanded to include writing and lecturing on the relationship between art and arms, curatorial consultancy and complete museum gallery design. He now works as an independent historian and author, writing about the art and history of Italy, most recently the little-known but stunning Medieval art of Piedmont.
