An evening walk led by Isobel Geddes.

The old railway cutting and Town Gardens shows the changing environment at the end of the Jurassic as the sea disappeared (due to Alps-related earth movements). The lower part of the rock sequence in the old railway cutting has fossils of a shallow and warm tropical sea. As the sea retreated, the rocks reveal a complex of freshwater and saline lagoons (fine algal limestone, with a lenticular channel containing marine molluscs), followed by non-marine sand and clay with freshwater gastropods. So changing conditions are reflected in the different fossils, evidence of the changing environmental conditions in this part of Britain at the close of the Jurassic Period 150 million years ago. The old quarries here provided stone for local buildings which will be examined around the Old Town.
