“Secret Sarsens”

Bring a picnic and enjoy this walk for all the family.

SUMMARY
A gentle walk along part of The Ridgeway from Hackpen to Monkton Down, ending with a picnic lunch in a sarsen coombe that you might not know, with fabulous views over the Avebury landscape. During the walk we’ll keep a look out for sarsen stones, call in at the Totterdown Brick Works, and find out what the antiquarians had to say about ghostly Glory Ann.

DETAILS

We meet in the Hackpen car-park on The Ridgeway at 10.30am on 25 August. Car park grid reference is SU 129 747. Please park considerately and economically. The walk is about 3km (2 miles) to our picnic destination and will take about an hour and a half. Most of the walk is along well-made foot paths with a few short steep-ish sections. There will also be areas of grass, uneven ground, and paths in ploughed fields.

Our destination is a steep coombe which you are welcome to explore, but to enjoy the views we’ll stay at the top! Bring your own picnic! (including anything else you need to eat your lunch out of doors, like a rug). Walkers can then make their own way back to the car-park (a map will be provided), or explore further by themselves, at their leisure (you will need Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 Landranger number 157).

Please ensure appropriate footwear and clothing is worn, taking into account the weather. Ensure you have sufficient fluids with you if the weather is hot. This is an exposed area of the countryside with little shelter and no refreshments. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

This walk will be led by Katy Whitaker.

COST – Adults £10 (WANHS members £8). Children under 16 – FREE. Booking essential as adult places are limited.
