OUTING: Stonehenge Landscape Walks – 2024

An afternoon walk, from Durrington Walls to Stonehenge, led by Museum Director, David Dawson

The Walk

This half-day tour starts at 1.30pm, meeting close to the Stonehenge Inn (SP4 8BN), at Durrington. It will take approximately 4.5 hours.

Walking through Durrington Walls you will find out more about Woodhenge, excavated by Maud Cunnington, who was once President of our Society. The route passes the Cuckoo Stone, a megalithic standing stone, before following the Apple Track – a WW1 light railway. We will also pass the prehistoric Cursus and the Bronze Age barrows of Kings Barrow ridge en route to Stonehenge. We will then hear about the WW1 Stonehenge airfield and to go to the western end of the Cursus before walking to the Stonehenge Visitor Centre. We will then return to Durrington by sharing cars.

The walk does not include a visit to the monument itself.
