Map of Wiltshire – John Speed

Our Archive and Library houses an intricate 1610 map of Wiltshire by famous cartographer John Speed (1552-1629). Speed's visually impressive maps of both county and country were renowned and sought-after worldwide.

This stunning map of Wiltshire was produced for Speed's series of county maps in the atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" in 1610.

Fun fact - When producing this particular map, Speed was unsure of the name North Burcombe - labelling it 'quaere' (meaning query) in his work. Little did he know that mapmakers would use his work and continue to mislabel the village as 'quaere' for over 100 years, eventually corrected in 1722 edition of Morden's map.
