Sergeant Troy’s Uniform from Far from the Madding Crowd – 1967 film

The costume worn by Terence Stamp when he played Sergeant Troy in the 1967 film of 'Far from the Madding Crowd'. Many scenes in the film were shot in Devizes - the production turned Devizes Market Place back in time to the Georgian period and used a number of locations in the town.

The costume has Terence Stamp's name on the label and was made by Nathan's - one of the largest theatrical costumiers (see this article from the V&A about its history).

We are grateful to the private lender for allowing the costume to be displayed in the exhibition.

The film was directed by John Schlesinger and starred Alan Bates, Julie Christie, Peter Finch and Terence Stamp - for more details, see the IMDB entry.

The film was re-issued on DVD, which included a short film made by Devizes TV that talks about the filming.
