Description

Summary: The first card is coloured and shows The Old Turnpike House, Potterne Road, Devizes, with a woman in a long skirt standing outside the door. The printed account reads: 'In the year 1868 the Devizes Turnpike Trust was abolished. Previous to that date the toll of 9d for a pair of horses, 41/2d single, 11/2d for a saddle horse was demanded by the Toll keeper who lived in this house. The Turnpike gates were burnt on Devizes Green, amid great rejoicings on Nov 6th 1868.' The second card is entitled Approach at Potterne and shows the road leading to Potterne with a house surrounded by trees above the road.
