Summary: 1 Bronze Age rough whetstone of sedimentary sandstone, from odite sediment, slightly hollowed on two sides, from Roundway Barrow 6 east end (G5b), Roundway, Wiltshire.

Research results

One of three grooved stones excavated by William Cunnington from eastern mound of a conjoined bowl barrow (Roundway G5b) in the 1850s. The stones were found with the primary cremation of the barrow, along with barbed and tanged arrowheads, a dagger and its sheath, an antler handle and other objects. The stone is a local quartz-rich sarsen, and would have been too soft to be used as a whetstone, however it would have been suitable for sharping arrow shafts and other wood or bone objects.
