Description

Summary: Stone head made from an ammonite, face is much worn, from Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire.

Research results

Recent research indicates that where the ammonite stone carved head was originally found is actually unknown, and it seems unlikely it was in Wiltshire, and not in Great Bedwyn (as previously thought). There is general agreement that the head dates from the Iron Age or early Roman period and that it is made of Portland stone.
