animal remains

Description

Summary: The animal remains from context K/I/(6) of the causewayed enclosure on Knap Hill, Alton, excavated by G Connah, 1961.

Research results

Marshall et al. (2020) have recently published the results of a Radiocarbon dating scheme carried out on the site in 2005. Samples were taken from antler A1 within this context, and dated to 4975 +/- 40 BP. Crucially, these dates were found to be statistically inconsistent with earlier radiocarbon datign of this antler and to be significantly earlier than other samples associated with the construction of the enclosure; the antler must either be considered to be redeposited from earlier activity on the site, or to represent an outlier.

The animal remains from context K/I/(6) excavations on Knap Hill, Alton, excavated by Graham Connah and the University of Cambridge in 1961. This assemblage comes from the undisturbed initial fill of the ditch and thus can be securely dated to the Neolithic occupation of the site, although it only contains a single phalanx, two sheep/goat vertebra and an antler tine.
