jug

Description

Identification note: Jug left at the Museum reception on 5 June 2010 with no donor contact details.

Summary: Bellarmine jug with stamped image of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine (1542 - 1621) on the neck. Stoneware (salt glazed) found in the 19th century by a labourer digging up a road in the Box area. As well as being used to carry beer and wine, these vessels were frequently used as 'Witch bottles'. The jug was filled with certain articles, sealed and buried. This was done in order to ward off a Witch's curse. Complete vessel, good condition.
