Research results

An exceptionally preserved copper alloy-bound yew bucket, found with a sub-adult probable male during excavations of an Early Medieval burial ground at Barrow Clump, excavated by Operation Nightingale, 2012-14. The bucket was placed to the left of the skull, in a burial which also contained an iron spearhead. These buckets can be dated to the 5th and 6th centuries, and are most often found with wealthy male graves, perhaps associated with feasting. Similar buckets were found with graves at Pewsey, and with a female burial in Collingbourne Ducis.
